Writer: Laura Murphy
Director: Ursula Martinez
In A Spectacle of Herself, writer and performer Laura Murphy fearlessly delves into her personal story bearing all on stage. The collection of scenes unified by the theme of space navigates both scientific and societal spheres, grappling with her fascination for that which is bigger than us and her place as an autistic queer womxn in a heteronormative patriarchy.
Murphy’s exploration unfolds a tapestry of intellectual stimulation through direct address, bold and absurd imagery, and performance art. From the opening image of a clown talking about being inside a birth canal to lip-syncing to Elon Musk on a hoverboard, Murphy executes a series of vignettes which create a bold and intimate world and journey.
While rejecting a conventional narrative arc which arguably feels disjointed in parts, Murphy skilfully comes back to the smallest of details from previous scenes in a way that makes everything interconnected. Each scene brims with conceptual and academic richness, contributing to the expansive exploration of the overarching theme of space. Though it may seem ambitious to some to cover so much, the portrayal of relentless rage against societal oppression resonates authentically, reflecting the enduring struggles within ‘the system.’
Jen Roxburgh’s atmospheric lighting uses low angles, heightening the impact of Murphy’s aerial rope performance while also drawing viewers intimately closer during confessional moments. However, it’s Ben Glover’s video design which shines in technical expertise with a video design showcasing how accessible captioning can enrich storytelling. Through adept use of font, size, and pace, Glover breathes dynamic life into Murphy’s impassioned rants, adding another layer of creativity to the production.
This production defies categorisation, standing as a testament to its originality and audacity. It celebrates the act of ‘taking up space’ in a world that often seeks to confine, offering a refreshing, radical and feminist perspective on existence and resistance.
