Concept and Director: Miet Warlop
This electrifying performance showcases an intrepid display of both physical and vocal prowess.
The stage is transformed into a curious amalgamation, reminiscent of a school gym meeting an orchestra, with an intriguing combination of different musical instruments and physical education equipment. Dennis Diels’ stark lighting consistently keeps the audience in view, indicating right from the start that this is a show which bears all.
The performance commences with what appears to be a warm-up for the artists, accompanied by a commentator’s strange ramblings on the surtitle screen: “[French sounding, indistinct untranslatable].” This sets the tone for the absurd humour that runs through the entire show, seamlessly juxtaposed with the unwavering dedication of each performer to their roles.
When the metronome starts ticking, the action unfolds as half of the performers take up their instruments. The initial light-heartedness is evident, such as when the cellist does sit-ups to play or the violinist perches on top of a balance beam, drawing fascinating parallels between sports, music, and, above all, performance. Reflecting the audience itself, the other half of the performers take on the role of enthusiastic spectators, clapping to the rhythm but eventually transforming into an ardent fanbase akin to those found in sports.
The last element is the introduction of lyrics such as ‘Run for your life. Until you die.’ The repeated chanting adds a humorous undertone initially, but as the tension and beat intensify, it takes on a more morbid note.
As the music starts pumping bass through your body, the experience becomes almost overwhelming. The relentless rhythm induces profuse sweating, and the ecstasy of repetition sees the performers meld with their instruments, while the supporters become a demanding, frenzied mob. Brief moments of stillness offer a momentary respite to contemplate the rhythm of modern life, but the metronome never ceases. The exhaustion permeates everyone present, all hoping to avoid the tragedy of losing the beat.
Miet Warlop’s meticulous vision and the unwavering commitment of the entire cast create a gripping show. The premise may be straightforward, but it evokes visceral and adrenaline-fueled reactions while offering various metaphors and societal reflections through its striking imagery. It’s well worth enduring the tedium and delirium to reach the beautiful disaster that concludes the performance.
This performance is vibrant and pulsates with energy, leaving an indelible impression on the audience. It’s a thrilling experience that blurs the lines between art, sport, and music.
