Part of the Ultimate Masterclass Festival, run in conjunction with Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, this event is a live interview with a British queen of pop about her life in the public eye.
Mel C aka Melanie Chisholm is best known as Sporty Spice, one of the much loved Spice Girls. Although since then, she has produced nine solo albums and once she hit her late forties finally got round to learning to DJ, and now tours the world “spinning records” and singing.
Unlike her concerts, the stage at the Music Hall for this event features some attractive lounge furniture and house plants. Mel C and Ryan Crighton, the young man interviewing her, sit on separate sofas projected onto the screen behind them so we can all see clearly.
The questions follow her life and career giving Mel C the chance to tell her side of the Spice Girls experience, from being inspired by Madonna to pursue a career on stage, to missing her call back audition due to tonsillitis. We hear about the highs and lows of being in one of Britain’s biggest bands of the 90s to how the end came with the solicitors letting the other girls know that Geri Halliwell, aka Ginger Spice, was leaving.
It is interesting to hear about things like the infamous taxi top ride for the Spice Girls performance at the Olympics, about meeting iconic musicians such as Stevie Wonder and Madonna and about the dynamic between the girls themselves.
Mel C is now the mother of a 17 year old daughter and recently got married, in a Victoria Beckham dress, to a screenwriter who she met on a dating app for celebrities. She admits that life is good and emphasises that we are never too old to learn a new skill.
She remains an inspirational icon of Girl Power and an absolute thrill of excitement went through the room at the answer to the last question about the possibility of a future Spice Girls reunion. The answer was notably not a “no”…
