This show has the subtitle of “The Magic of Michael Jackson”, and its star Ben Bowman, brings just that to the stage. Utterly captivating throughout the show, by James Baker Productions, the whole cast bring all the sparkle and pizzazz anyone could hope for from a Michael Jackson tribute. The band are brilliant, the lighting is mesmerising, the dancers are stunning and so well choreographed. Bowman portrays Michael Jackson perfectly, complete with all the moves including the crotch grabs and the moonwalk; he also makes a lot of the unique noises associated with the King of Pop.
A highlight of the set is Dirty Diana when one of the dancers wears a red lycra bodysuit and does a gasp-inducing routine including the splits. For another song Bowman comes out into the audience, giving high fives to some of the children, many of whom are dressed up as the iconic singer. Indeed one young lad called Frankie is picked to go up on stage as the “best dressed” to get a photo with all the performers for social media in the second half.
For the encore Bowman comes out with a small case, places it down with a flurry of dust and then, in time with the introduction of Billie Jean, unpacks the black sequin jacket, hat and single silver glove that many have been waiting for. The crowd really go wild and it is an amazing performance, before Heal the World closes the show.
The only thing better than this very theatrical performance would be seeing Michael Jackson himself, and obviously that cannot happen anymore. The number of people exclaiming “wow” and “this is sooo good” is a testament to Bowman and everyone involved in the show.
