Matt Hobs is mad about badgers. Is it possible to make a show that is completely, one-hundred-percent about our stripy-backed friends? Possibly – with the odd hedgehog reference snuck in. Sett(le) in for a fun hour of badger facts and conservation conversations from a friendly science communicator and comedian.
Matt Hobs is a Bristolian badger fan with a gentle West Country lilt and the occasional penchant for a filthy joke. This unexpected contrast is amusing and adds an extra layer of dimension to this nature-themed, adults-only show. He’s a personable and engaging host, and ready to share stories on this rather lovely subject matter.
100% Badgers is jam-packed full of everything you could ever want to know about these marvellous mammals. From honey badgers to humping badgers, badger-watching to badger hats. Hobs has hyper-focused on badger facts to produce this show, and we are here for it.
If this reviewer were to give one critique, while the components of 100% Badgers are sound, the structure feels a little clunky. A substantial section is given over to the plight of badger-supporting charities and the debate around TB. If this were scattered through the show or in chunks, it would feel balanced, but most of this content is in the last twenty minutes or so. It’s important stuff and deserves to be there, but the comedic aim of this show would be greatly enhanced by another a look at the structure. Front-loading the funnies leads to a bit of an energy shift in the tail end of the show.
There is a real beauty in the fact that Hobs gives actionable directions for audience members to support our badger friends. There’s a sense that many may leave with a better idea of how to help nature, and this is very pleasing. Smartly, we finish up with a feast of cute videos and pictures. Who can resist a paws-up badger cub smiling sweetly for the camera? Heart-warming? Big tick. The audience, and this reviewer, squeal with delight.
If you like watching nature videos on YouTube, enjoy a gentle badger fact and would like to watch a grown-man squeeze into a children’s cardigan – 100% Badgers may be just the show for you.
