Seth Rudetsky returns to the Crazy Coqs for the first time since 2019, in honour of his new upcoming cruise show, Divas through the Decades, exploring the women who have shaped the musical theatre world, and what it truly means to be a diva.
Seth admits the term diva has perhaps lost its true meaning in current society, a throwaway comment people use almost daily. However, it really should be a badge of honour to be branded a diva, and his new show is an homage to the divas who shaped the musical theatre industry and changed its course forever.
Rudetsky is a shining star of Broadway himself, an incredibly talented musician, having accompanied many shows over time, both on Broadway and on tour, as well as hosting talk shows and podcasts. He truly knows Broadway like no other.
His new show is a magnificently detailed examination of the women of Broadway, from the 1930s onwards. Honouring their individuality and their stamp on the industry, Rudetsky talks you through each diva, explaining what made them a star, as well as offering audio and video evidence of their talents.
The show is not quite what is anticipated, but is a far more enjoyable experience as a result. Instead of covering the songs which put each diva on the map, Rudestky plays each of their versions for the room from his own private catalogue, so the audience not only can understand his analogies of each woman, but also the women in the show.
It is a wonderfully refreshing take to listen to a chronological history of Broadway, from the women themselves, instead of just covering the songs. It feels like a true step back in time, and a chance to revel in some of the most incredible voices the world has heard.
The only negative with the show is that we ran out of time, or merely that the show is not long enough. It is wonderful to sit and be transported through time, and idolise so many powerful women. Rudetsky’s ability to hold an audience is an utter joy; his anecdotal conversation with the room holds attention from the very start, and the show flies by as a result. He’s a natural on stage and a sheer pleasure to spend an evening with.
Even the most avid fan will learn something from the show, thanks to Rudetsky’s behind-the-scenes knowledge. Even those not well-versed in musical theatre alumni will come away, having a delicious crash course in the industry’s iconic divas, with a grin on their face.
