Choreographer and Director: Botis Seva
Botis Seva returns to the London dance space with his new show Until We Sleep. Working with his insanely talented company of dancers – Far from the Norm – audiences are treated to a new performance like no other: Seva’s now iconic hip hop fusion dance.
East London-born Seva first previewed a short bill of his works at Sadler’s Wells in 2015, which launched his career into a greater sphere, with the support of Breakin’ Convention. Known for his hip-hop-centric movements, Until We Sleep is an exploration and showcase of Seva’s growth both in life and his career, penned as being “a fusion of the rebellious energy of his early work with the refined methodology and personal growth developed over the past 14 years”.
The show, from the very first beat, is immense; it captivates attention immediately. The audience is unable to do anything but be drawn in by this mystical storytelling. Seva’s talent as a choreographer is not in doubt – the show is beautifully dynamic, energetic and well paced. An intelligent mix of power and softness, the company moves with such intent, the show feels so impeccably choreographed. Following a wandering community, on their journey away from their confinements, it is a battle for them to deviate from their set paths, and can they defy the constructs placed on them?
Composed by Torben Sylvest, the score is a wonderful mix of spoken words, durgy beats and hip hop-inspired rhythms. They create such an interesting harmony – some moments beautifully peaceful, juxtaposed by moments of panic and want. The energy is truly powerful, keeping the audience captivated throughout.
Slyvest and Seva have created a genius show which is a wonderful expression of the vulnerability of life. Despite some moments of true gruelling testing, it is evident that this is a work of hope, not of anger. Even in their struggles, the wanderers remain hopeful and carry on despite the setbacks they face. It is a celebration of their resilience, of themselves and humankind, of how people will keep going despite the odds against them.
Tom Visser’s lighting design is simply stunning. It marries the music, the choreography and the performers together beautifully. Literally highlighting key moments in the show, and adding light to the hopeful moments, with quick transitions to darkness in the moments of panic. It is a spectacle in its own right, yet is such a wonderful honouring and understanding of Seva’s work.
There is no doubt that Seva’s winning streak is continuing. His power, understanding and passion shine on the stage, and it is an utter joy to be able to witness such an important performance.
Runs until 28 June 2025
