Book: Anna Kemp
Adapted by Full House Theatre
Based on the popular picture book by Anna Kemp, illustrated by Sara Ogilvie, The Worst Princess turns the classic fairy tale on its head with a fiery heroine who isn’t content to sit around waiting for her “happily ever after.” Full House Theatre’s stage adaptation builds on the spirit of the book and brings it to life with charm, creativity, and a wonderful score.
The audience packed with young children are engaged throughout the hour-long show. Packed with energy and humour the performance cleverly combines storytelling, song, and physical theatre.

One of the standout features of the show is the music. The original songs are catchy and beautifully performed, with strong harmonies that showcased the vocal talents of the cast. There are moments of real beauty in the score, soaring melodies and playful rhythms that add depth and emotion to the action on stage. The ensemble cast move effortlessly between characters, with expressive physicality and voice work that brings each scene to life.
The use of puppetry is another highlight. The dragon puppet, in particular, is a magical creation. Full of personality and wonderfully integrated into the story. It drew audible gasps of excitement, perhaps tinged with a little fear.
The set is cleverly designed for a small-scale touring production. A castle structure remains onstage throughout, providing a fairy-tale atmosphere, allowing the performers to take centre stage.
At times the pace of the show isn’t consistent. A section where the princess waits… and waits for her prince features an extended series of gasps that, while initially funny and effective at conveying her boredom, drags on too long and risks losing the children’s attention.
The ensemble cast deliver strong performances throughout, using movement and expression to perfectly capture the rebellious tone of the book. The final moments of the show include a singalong element, a lovely touch, sending everyone home with a smile on their faces.
Full House Theatre’s The Worst Princess is a vibrant and thoroughly enjoyable retelling of a much-loved story. With its strong performances, exciting scoring, and magical moments, it is a treat that both children and their grown ups can enjoy together.
