Dead and Kicking tells the remarkable true story of Jeanne, who through a series of almost unbelievable bureaucratic errors was legally declared dead, despite being very much alive. The production opens with four women in suits typing furiously at keyboards before Jeanne herself takes centre stage, cigarette in hand and exuding a sweet demeanour. The ensemble soon joins in, underscoring the moment with a harmonious hum before becoming the first of several musical interludes.
The absurdity of Jeanne’s predicament provides fertile ground for the show’s quirky humour, which is interwoven throughout, gradually giving way to deeper existential questions. The narrative is easy to follow and engaging as we track Jeanne’s increasingly desperate attempts to prove her existence. This journey is made even more curious by the appearance of a gremlin offering unsolicited advice. Her frustration with never-ending administrative systems and bureaucracy is all too relatable. While the ending doesn’t quite match the sharpness of the storytelling that precedes it, it still delivers an interesting reflection on what it truly means to be alive.
The cast excels in delivering comedy through cabaret tropes such as can-can dancing in satirical moments, brief yet hilarious audience engagement and physical comedy of unusual yet curious behaviour. Tilly Botsford makes for a cunning antagonist, while Larissa Crafford-Lazarus captivates with her expressive performance as the gremlin. Rosa Collier brings a composed wit to the ensemble, Ezra Saifie is entertaining as the lawyer and Camilla Anvar anchors the piece with warmth and bewildered charm as Jeanne. The direction is seamless in transitioning between the multiple characters and incorporating a variety of theatrical forms to create a dynamic and engaging story arc.
Dead and Kicking is a thoroughly entertaining performance of a unique story which balances playful absurdity with exploring what it is to truly feel alive.
