Duck Pond reimagines The Ugly Duckling and Swan Lake, blending the two classic tales before delivering a modern twist. Guided by Cupid, the Ugly Duckling and the Prince fall in love, but their romance faces the timeless fairytale obstacle: how could a humble duck ever belong with a magnificent prince? The seductive Black Swan complicates matters, forming a love triangle that intensifies as the Ugly Duckling unexpectedly transforms into a White Swan, leading to a surprising final twist.
The ensemble bursts into life, emerging from behind the slatted box curtain design, and tumbling into action with creative choreography that vividly conveys the characters’ emotions. The romantic duets particularly stand out, capturing the ebb and flow of love with fluid movements. Strong storytelling drives the narrative, with each scene building upon the last and shifting the story’s pace, and creativity shines as the same move is never used twice. In group scenes, the stage becomes a feast of acrobatics, offering so much simultaneous action that you are spoilt for choice of where to look. However, the third act feels unnecessary, diluting the impact of the dramatic ending to Act Two.
Circa showcases an extraordinary ensemble of circus performers who exhibit remarkable strength and flexibility. The breathtaking aerial turrets, reaching impressive heights, are particular highlights where you can’t help but gasp, leaving you in awe. They demonstrate the performers’ sheer physical prowess by reaching the limits of human capability.
Libby McDonnell’s costume design balances sparkle with humour, accentuating moments with shimmering elegance whilst also embracing playful, clown-like elements in others. Jethro Woodward’s composition and sound design add a fresh layer to the production, reimagining Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake with funky beats that maintain the show’s momentum and energy.
Duck Pond is an energetic fusion of storytelling and circus, offering a dazzling treat for the whole family.
