This play is based on a riveting true story from 19th Century America, which makes it even more compelling to watch it brought to life on stage. The story follows Lizzie Nutt, who is involved in a scandal that becomes widely published. The scandal involves Lizzie’s fiancé, a lawyer named Nicholas Dukes, who is made to believe she has been having multiple affairs, an act that was strictly prohibited in this period. This has devastating effects for all involved.
This play displays how patriarchal society was in the 19th Century. It shows how men treated women both as frail creatures that should be protected, but also people who they can take advantage of. This
hypocritical view usually comes from a superficial idea of pride. Another theme explored is guilt, both through physical actions and betrayal. A large portion of the play takes place in a courtroom, in which
not every person is happy with the final verdict, which links into the topic of the court of public opinion. People in society harshly judge and criticise those in the limelight for reasons that are deemed socially unacceptable. The three ensemble characters act as news reporters throughout, which serves as physical evidence of the watching eyes of society. We see how people view crimes and what is justified or not.
The setting and costumes of the piece are accurate to the period, and there are some particularly beautiful outfits worn by Lizzie. She has several costume changes throughout and there is a great attention to detail in her accessories. One all white outfit was an elegant way to display her wealth at the time, as white clothing could only be afforded by the rich.
Despite the ominous overtones of unresolved guilt, there are moments of a lighthearted nature. Lizzie’s brother, James, has comedic moments. There is also a clear portrayal of a love between two siblings, which is heartwarming to witness.
Overall, this play unravels many difficult topics, but they are wonderfully explored by the very talented actors.
Runs Until 2nd September 2023.
