When Juniper meets Jules on the dancefloor of a packed nightclub, they hit it off immediately, going home together and, unbeknownst to them, sparking the start of a long, complex relationship. From exploring the depths of their sexuality to pushing the boundaries of polyamory – they stumble through the ups and downs together, holding on to each other as tight as possible in an attempt to stop the other from drifting away.
Jules (Gabriella Schmidt) hasn’t always been a lesbian – she’s not even sure if she is now, under the mindset that attraction is attraction and skin is skin. But Juniper (Stella Taylor) ignites new feelings inside of her, making her realise that she didn’t even know a relationship like this was possible. Juniper on the other hand is unashamedly out and proud, comfortable within her sexuality and open to love. More reserved than Jules, she prefers to take things more traditionally, not as intrigued by the idea of an open relationship, but so in love that she’s willing to explore anything to stay with the woman she’s fallen so hard for.
Performed as standalone snippets throughout each stage of their relationship, Schmidt and Taylor are the perfect casting choice for this queer love story. Their chemistry is undeniable, and it’s hard not to get sucked into their storyline, as they make their chalk and cheese style characters endearingly adorable. Their confidence knows no bounds as they explicitly re-enact sex acts in surprisingly graphic detail, giving the audience a voyeuristic glimpse into the depths of the characters’ relationship that would normally be glossed over or subtly hinted towards, instead of a glittering gold strap-on being produced in the middle of the stage!
Stephanie Martin has curated these characters so well that each snapshot scene transports you directly into the relationship itself. Martin’s balance between tense, curt arguments mixed in with sweet compliments and loving words make the interactions between Taylor and Schmidt rivetingly realistic. As the audience are taken through the journey of their relationship, the narrative becomes even more engaging.
This romantic, realistic comedy-drama is authentic, compelling and charming. You’ll leave the theatre wanting more from these fabulous characters because an hour’s insight just isn’t enough.
