After their sell-out 2023 tour, The Overtones are back on the road with their Good Times Christmas Tour, featuring 25 dates across the country.
Opening the show once again is Britain’s Got Talent finalist and runner-up Tom Ball, returning for his second year as their supporting act. A successful recording artist in his own right, Ball kicks off proceedings with energy and enthusiasm, delivering a mix of old standards and fresh material. While his storytelling through song could benefit from a touch more variety, his powerful voice and undeniable charm make him a clear audience favourite.
When it comes to the main act, The Overtones deliver an evening packed with fan favourites and new hits alike. Classics like Gambling Man and Say a Little Prayer are highlights of the evening, while new releases such as Turn Your Light On and their standout version of Walking in the Air showcase their versatility. Their hallmark tight harmonies and exceptional vocals remain as impressive as ever. While their sound has evolved and lacks some of the depth of earlier years, they’ve adapted effectively to ensure their unique style continues to resonate, standing out in today’s music landscape.
However, to call The Overtones mere vocalists would be an injustice. They’re showmen through and through—charming, charismatic, and surprisingly agile dancers. They are high-energy, and they know how to keep an audience entertained. That said, not every number lands as strongly. A Bruno Mars-Jackson 5 mashup feels a little muddled, but it is enthusiastically received by the crowd and aligns with the tour’s “Good Times” ethos.
The biggest letdown of the night is the use of pre-recorded backing tracks. In the past, a live band accompanied their performances, elevating the show to a higher level. Without it, some moments are less dynamic, and the absence is noticeable.
Still, The Overtones delivers an uplifting evening of music and entertainment. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a newcomer, the show offers plenty to enjoy. While there’s room for improvement, this remains a solid performance by a talented and enduring group.
Next plays on 10 December in Ipswich, 11 December in Cambridge, 12 December in Stoke, and 14 December in Birmingham.
