Cheesecake, shoulder pads, and Latin pop stars abound at the Cutting Room for a fewSunday nights this fall. Set in a retirement home in Miami, Thank You for Being a Friend sends up the classic sitcom The Golden Girls. With spunky musical numbers and nods to the source material, this show is a spirited romp through the Shady Oaks retirement community.
A charismatic ensemble cast of Sam LaFrage, Charles Baran, Josh Warr, Michael James Valvo, and Michael Carrasco work fantastically together as Dorthea, Roz, Blanchette, Sophie, and Ricky Martin. The ’80s sitcom trope of improbable hijinks ensues as the silver-haired honeys of Miami face off against their Latin pop star neighbor to gain the upper hand in an ongoing neighborhood battle. Featuring high camp drag portrayals of beloved television characters and snappy innuendos, the timing and sass of Thank You for Being a Friend is a breath of fresh Floridian air.
The show is still finding its feet with some of the nuances of timing and delivery, but the charm and wit of Thank You for Being a Friend carries the productionquite a distance. The costumes by Ryan Moller are impeccable, and harken back to the stylings of mature women in the 1980s. Each character is both a caricature of her source material, and a loving and honest representationfrom the well-seasoned cast. The balance of camp and narrative theatre serves this piece well, and as audiences continue to pack the Cutting Room, these rambunctious old gals will simply get better with age.
