Stuart Bowden: Wilting in Reverse – Underbelly, Edinburgh

Reviewer: Theodore Lamb

Wilting in reverse is a play about a play. It’s a play about an actor playing Stuart Bowden. The year is 2085 and Stuart Bowden is dead. Stuart Bowden plays the actor playing Start Bowden and with him, we – the audience – create the world of the play.

From the moment he steps on stage, we are on his side – he is engaging and likeable, dressed all in black with a red ski mask that eventually becomes too hot he welcomes us to a new world. A new world that only he can save.

Bowden is a master of physical comedy, and through some of the most supported and pitch perfect audience participation you’re likely to see, he welcomes the audience to join him. We play Amy, the love of his life, we play the builder of ‘this moment’ we play night stars and the echoed voices. We dance, and we narrate the story alongside him until we’ve almost forgotten that this is a story at all – we live in this world alongside him.
The real surprise however is how emotionally invested the audience becomes. Bowden is constantly and unflinchingly hilarious, but by using live music and a loop pedal he draws us further in to the narrative, but along side the comedy, you feel your heart begin to break for him.
Essentially, Wilting in Reverse is a story of love lost, and of the power of storytelling – and Bowden is at the top of his game.
Runs until 30 August 2015
