Writer: Rich Hardisty
Philosophical and deeply emotive, Rich Hardisty’s Silly Boyis more than just a stand up comedy show. As a storyteller and true master of his craft, he brings a sublime yet deeply moving debut show to the Godber Studio at Hull Truck Theatre – and what a show it was – a real tonic; endearing and utterly flawless.
Set to an 80s power ballad soundtrack this beautifully shocking and well rehearsed routine was a pure joy from start to finish with Hardisty not pausing for breath; full throttle, high-octane and passionately compelling.
Baring his soul with themes often difficult to digest this wasn’t an easy watch. Regaling tales of his own mental health, of depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, self-harm, anorexia and heroin addiction, this was a difficult pill to swallow but using deft comedic timing skills this hard hitting one man show beats any pill prescribed on the NHS.
The small but appreciative crowd were transfixed throughout and one is excited for the the future of the show’s creator. Seldom has one spent a more pleasurable hour in a theatre.
If therapy doesn’t work for you then Rich Hardisty just might. Brave and bruised the journey is harsh, brilliant and beautifully shocking. Rich Hardisty’s future is certainly bright.
