In a significant boost for the UK theatre landscape, Papatango has announced a revitalised and expanded format for its prestigious New Writing Prize. The changes come as a direct response to the shrinking number of opportunities available to emerging writers in the current climate.
Despite receiving no funding from Arts Council England, Papatango is doubling down on its commitment to new talent. The redevelopment of the Prize is designed to counter the trend of declining productions for new plays, which the company notes have dropped by 30 per cent since 2019.
Artistic Director George Turvey and Executive Producer Chris Foxon highlighted the importance of this move in a joint statement released today.
“With opportunities for playwrights – especially the unknown but brilliant debutants we have such a track record launching – disappearing, we are proud to have found a way not merely to sustain the Papatango Prize but to expand it.”
They added: “This year: doubles the number of productions; doubles the number of commissions; adds extra cash awards and in-depth CPD; and continues its unmatched offer of feedback for everyone. It is more vital than ever that our Prize empowers extraordinary new writers to shine.”
Two Key Awards
Under the new structure, the Prize will champion two playwrights through significant commissions and development:
-
The Overall Winner: Will receive a full premiere production in Autumn 2027, co-produced by Papatango and Park Theatre on the Park200 stage. This package includes an £8,000 commission, royalties, and publication with Nick Hern Books.
-
The Papatango Prize Discovery: A newly introduced award designed to support writers working across various styles and scales. The recipient will receive an £8,000 commission and a bespoke development and production pathway allowing for longer-term dramaturgical growth.
Support for the Shortlist and Entrants
Papatango is maintaining its reputation for broad industry support. The three remaining shortlisted writers will receive cash awards and invitations to join a year-long development group featuring mentoring and dramaturgy.
Critically, the company will continue its unique pledge to provide personalised feedback to every single entrant, ensuring all writers gain value from the submission process.
Success Stories
The Prize has a formidable track record of launching careers. Previous winners and finalists—including Samuel Bailey, Dawn King, and Nkenna Akunna—have gone on to win BAFTAs, Oliviers, and Critics’ Circle Awards.
Most recently, current winner Hannah Doran was named a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and the OffWestEnd Awards following her Papatango-backed production at Park Theatre.
