Disney’s award-winning musical, The Lion King, is coming to the Edinburgh Playhouse for a three month run beginning on the 12th of October. Four years in the making, this new adaptation of Disney’s Oscar-winning animated film, adapted and directed by Julie Taymor, brings together a cast of over 50 actors, dancers and singers from 17 different countries, this production promises to be truly international.
The musical, which is currently playing at London’s West End, is one of only five musicals to have been performed for over ten years in both Broadway and London, and the show has been seen by 65 million people in 15 different countries. The Edinburgh run will not only make Scotland the 18th country that the show has visited, but also marks the only Scottish dates in a national tour that is set to last two and a half years, with more dates to be announced.
Fiona Thomas, Vice President, Live Entertainment, The Walt Disney Company EMEA said: “We are so excited to be bringing Julie Taymor’s legendary production of The Lion King to Scottish audiences for the first time. Edinburgh seemed the perfect city to host this truly international production, given its long tradition of drawing audiences from across the country and around the world to experience its arts festivals. There is also no theatre more suited to the epic scale of The Lion King than the majestic Playhouse Theatre.”
