NEWS: The Addams Family musical makes its Northern premiere

Critically acclaimed The Addams Family makes its northern debut at The People’s Theatre in Newcastle next month.

In the four years since opening on Broadway in April 2010, the musical was revised for a successful tour of the US, and has subsequently been staged in Brazil, Sweden, Sydney, Argentina, Finland, Peru, Asia and the Philippines. The original Broadway production was nominated for 2 Tony awards, and won 8 Drama Desk Awards, 3 Drama League Awards and 5 Outer Critics Circle Awards.

Nice Swan Theatre Company is among the first in the UK to secure stage rights to the musical, and are proud to bring us the northern premiere of The Addams Family. Describing themselves as ‘a platform for young talent’ the company was established in 2009 and pride themselves in providing a bridge into professional theatre for the under 25’s. Not just for actors, but for talented young musicians, designers and dancers to express themselves and develop as individuals.

Written by Jersey Boys authors Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, The Addams Family follows the satirical and ghoulish group of characters, originally created by Charles Addams in the late 30’s as a one panel gag for the New Yorker. In this latest incarnation, composer Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party, Big Fish) combines traditional musical theatre with latin, bunny hop and tap in a fun and full rousing score.

Fast forward past the original series when Wednesday and Pugsley were children, to present day. Princess of darkness Wednesday has grown up and fallen in love. This may seem like every parent’s dream; to see their little ones fly the nest into the arms of a man they would be proud to call son. This however, is not the case for Gomez, for Lucas is not one of them, but a nice ordinary young man from a respectable family. After confiding in her father, Wednesday asks Gomez to do the unthinkable and keep the secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. With potions, confessions, jealousy, instruments of torture and romantic attachments to celestial bodies, will the family manage one normal night when they host a dinner party for Lucas’s family?

Known for their high standards and affordable prices, Nice Swan Theatre Company are led by Producer Jamie Gray, and The Addams Family marks a very exciting and eagerly anticipated arrival to the northeast.

The show runs from the 9th to the 12th April, and tickets can be bought from Nice Swan Theatre Company’s website here.
