Some of the biggest stars of London’s West End have re-recorded Jacques Brel’s If We Only Have Love in aid of Childline as the service celebrates its 30th anniversary.
Among the array of West End stars singing on the release are Daniel Boys (The Boys in the Band, Spamalot) r (Phantom of The Opera); Cassidy Janson (Beautiful, The Carole King Musical), Poseletso Sejosingoe (The Lion King), Claire Sweeney (Chicago), and Dean John Wilson (Aladdin The Musical).
The idea for the single came in 2011 when former PYE Records/ATV International record executive, Robert Page, decided that he wanted to help Childline celebrate their 30th anniversary. He chose a song If We Only Have Love, which is a cover of a powerful song from the 1960s and 70s brought up to date with a pop/gospel flavour by the producers.
Page said: “I am absolutely delighted with the finished recording, it has exceeded far beyond what I had imagined.”
Central to the project was West End Musical Director, Jae Alexander, who was instrumental in bringing Page’s vision to fruition. Alexander engaged top producer/music arranger Matthew Brind, who is no stranger to the Christmas charts himself. Brind has arranged the music for two out of the last three Christmas number ones. He also engaged Annie Skates (best known as the vocal coach for Simon Cowell’s team on The X-Factor) to create the vocal arrangement.
Spokesperson for the NSPCC Suzanne Ryder-Richardson commented: “A very big thank you to everyone involved in the making of West End Sings for Childline. We are delighted to be benefiting from this single and hope lots of people go out and buy or download it. All the money raised will go towards funding Childline, which takes calls 24 hours a day seven days a week from young people across the UK, who feel they have nowhere else to turn.”
The single is available for pre-order on iTunes from today, 2 December, and is released on 9 December for download. Listen to a sample here…
