NEWS: Southampton’s Nuffield Theatre team to operate new arts complex

The company running Southampton’s Nuffield Theatre has been announced as the operating company for Southampton’s new Arts Complex.

Located in Guildhall Square in the centre of Southampton, the new £22 million purpose-built Arts Complex is due to open in 2016. The new performing arts building will include a flexible 447 seat main house theatre, a 135 seat studio, screening facilities, rehearsal and workshop spaces, and a café bar and bistro.

Nuffield is Southampton’s leading producing theatre company and was recently awarded Regional Theatre of the Year 2015 at The Stage Awards.Nuffield will continue to create its core work as a producing theatre company, and will run both the new city centre venue and its existing theatre on the University of Southampton’s Highfield Campus.

The new flexible space will open up new exciting possibilities for us, allowing us to maintain our focus on supporting the development of the country’s best mid-career theatre designers and directors, while the studio space and other workshop spaces will form the bedrock of our artistic development and community engagement programmes“.

Councillor Simon Letts, Leader of Southampton City Council, said: “I am pleased to welcome Nuffield as the operator of our new Arts Complex. This decision cements our original ambitions for this project, creating a vibrant Cultural Quarter as well as supporting and championing excellence in local business and economy. I’m looking forward to experiencing the vibrant and original programme of events, education and community focus that this partnership promises to bring.”
