Colchester’s Mercury Theatre have come up with a unique way of helping prepare audiences for their forthcoming production of Macbeth.
For those who struggle with Shakespeare’s language the venue have launched The Bard in The Bog. Every toilet stall in the theatre has been taken over with displays suggesting Shakespearian ways of saying everyday phrases.
Robin Fenwick, Director of Communications and Audience Services at the venue explained the idea. “People sometimes rule out going to a Shakespeare play because the language is different from how we talk today. We’re using the couple of minutes our audiences are on the loo to give them some Shakespeare to take home!”
Macbeth runs at the Essex venue from October 2 – 18th and the venue is hoping for better luck than the last occasion they staged ‘The Scottish Play’ – the theatre had a major fire during the last run of the playin 1996!
