Ever fancied yourself as Dorothy?
Or maybe Cruella is more your thing?
If you’ve ever dreamed of owning your own theatrical costume then Birmingham Repertory Theatre is the place to be on April 7 as the theatre opens its doors to members of the public for a special one-off costume sale.
Some of the many costumes that are available include Dorothy’s trademark gingham dress from the REP’s 2005 Wizard of Oz production, Cruella’s The Hundred and One Dalmatians faux-fur coat, a beautifully detailed 17th Century-style gown and a range of courtiers costumes. There will also be hats, shoes, accessories and some unusual speciality props available to buy – with some extra special items being auctioned off to the highest bidder.
“Our wardrobe department and prop makers are extremely talented – the wonderful costumes and vast number of items they make are a vital part of our productions. Many items we keep in store for future use, however, there’s only so much we can keep and by having a big sale it gives us a great opportunity to have a spring clear out as well as raise money to invest in the theatre’s future.” Tomas Wright, Head of Production says.
Having made thousands of costumes in-house over the years, the REP is hoping to reach out to groups and individuals alike with the sale being very much inclusive to all as Rachel Cranny, Head of Fundraising, explains. “Our costume and props sale will definitely appeal to amateur dramatic societies, costume hire companies, schools and collectors of theatrical paraphernalia. I’d urge anyone who’s interested in theatre or those who would just like a fabulous fancy dress costume to come along and have a rummage. By doing so they’ll be supporting The REP.”
All proceeds from the sale will go towards the theatre’s REP First fundraising campaign which is hoping to raise £1million. The funds will be used to stage new productions and promote training opportunities.
So, whether you’re looking to kit out your am-dram or just want to wow your friends at the next fancy dress party, get on down and browse through the hundreds of costumes they will have on offer.
The REP’s Grand Sale takes place on Saturday April 7 between 11am -5pm at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Centenary Square, Birmingham. Further information is available on their website.
