NEWS: Alex Gaumond joins UK cast of Matilda

AlexGaumondOlivier Award nominated musical theatre actor and West End favourite Alex Gaumond will join the UK cast of Matilda from the 3rd September.

Gaumond will don the trenchcoat as the menacing Miss Trunchbull the teaching nemesis of young Matilda Wormwood. Gaumond’s previous theatre credits include Top Hat The Musical (Aldywch Theatre), Jesus Christ Superstar (Ljubljana, Slovenia), We Will Rock You (Dominion Theatre / original UK tour), Legally Blonde (Savoy Theatre), Desperately Seeking Susan (Novello Theatre), Guys and Dolls (Donmar Warehouse UK tour), Sunday in the Park with George (Wyndhams Theatre), Scrooge (London Palladium) and The Full Monty (original UK tour.)

Joining him on the 3rd of September will be Kay Murphy as the eccentric ballroom loving Mrs Wormwood, the disenfranchised mother of Matilda. Murphy’s previous credits include he Tailormade Man (Arts Theatre), Top Hat The Musical (Aldywch Theatre), Chicago (Aldephi Theatre &Istanbul), Never Forget (UK tour), La Cage Aux Folles (Menier Chocolate Factory), Babes in Arms (Chichester Festival Theatre), The Rocky Horror Show (UK Tour/West End), Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (New London Theatre) and Fosse (European tour).

Matilda is based on the huge children’s novel by Roald Dahl and plays at the Cambridge Theatre in Seven Dials, London. Originally commissioned by the RSC in Stratford for a 12 week engagement in 2010 the production opened in the West End on the 25th October 2011.

With a book written by Dennis Kelly and music/lyrics by comedian Tim Minchin Matilda has won a total of 24 awards for the London production alone, while the Broadway production has won a total of 20 Awards including a 2013 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical.
