Ministry of Science Live – Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield

Reviewer: Laura Stimpson

Writer and Director: Mark Thompson

Ministry of Science Live landed in Huddersfield as part of its extensive UK theatre tour. The audience arrive to a bright orange set, with a huge TV screen and a desk and are soon introduced to two presenters Mike and Olivia who are wearing lab coats. It’s difficult to know how the attention of a theatre full of children from 6 plus is going to be kept for the duration of this 90 minute show, but from the outset they have the audience clapping, cheering and engaged.

The audience are promised bangs and explosions and that’s what they get – cannons, balloons and chemical reactions. Mike and Olivia introduce many great scientist and engineers including: Ada Lovelace, Thomas Eddison, Mary Jackson, Sir Isaac Newton and Marie Curie. They use these renowned people to set the context of their next experiment. We learn about force, energy, chemical reactions, elements and more. Everything is hands on, full of energy and interesting, the children are on the edge of their seat, the adults are on the edge of their seats too. There’s lots of opportunities for the audience to be involved too, including a glow stick experiment and involving members of the audience in the experiments on stage.

Mike and Olivia work well together, they are constantly engaging and have great chemistry. It’s astounding that they have memorised all of the information they share throughout the show, a particular mention must go to Mike’s rendition of the periodic table song.

There are so many highlights of the show. Two stand out experiments include the audience being fired at with plastic bottles and a fire tornado.

This show is truly inspired and is sure to inspire audience members of any age. The perfect way to introduce your children to how fun science is in a fast paced, engaging, thrilling environment.
