Our Liverpool Laughs series offers short, witty and slightly tongue-in-cheek insights into the offerings at the Liverpool Comedy Festival. Simon Warner tells us about their showViva Hypnosis, which they will be performing at The Epstein Theatre.

How would you describe your show in one sentence?

Taking you on a rip-roaring, hilarious hypnotic trip to Las Vegas and beyond…an immersive, interactive comedy hypnosis experience like never before!

Is this your first visit to the Liverpool Comedy Festival, if so what interesting tales have you been told about what to expect?

Our experiences of Liverpool audiences so far have been amazing – Liverpool people are fun, friendly, have big imaginations and have plenty of get up and go! That means they’re PERFECT for being hypnotised! (And I also know that because I’m married to one!) Liverpool has always provided the best hypnotic volunteers and audience members of anywhere we’ve performed in the world – they’ve always been our most memorable and funniest shows!

How has the show developed on the way to the Liverpool Comedy Festival?

Our first ever performance of Viva Hypnosis was in Liverpool – so it holds a special place in our hearts. The show is constantly evolving and has done so from it’s inaugural performance in Liverpool, right the way through our Caribbean tour and our Edinburgh Festival Fringe run to rave critic and audience reviews…which we’re really chuffed about! We’ve added new sketches, new dance numbers, new music tracks and even new costumes… we get audience feedback from every single performance and use this to constantly improve the show! Our audiences are particularly important to us – as they are the true stars of the show!

How have you been preparing for the Liverpool Comedy Festival?

We have just finished at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe – had a fantastic (and tiring!) time and performed to rave reviews and packed audiences who cameout with aching jaws and tired bellies from laughing so much! After 25 consecutive nights of shows at the world’s biggest arts and entertainment festival…by the time Viva Hypnosis gets back to Liverpool for the Liverpool Comedy Festival…it’ll be the best it has ever been! The Comedy Festival Audiences will be in for a right treat! :)

What do you think sets your show apart from all the other festival offerings?

Viva Hypnosis is the UK’s first and only full-production interactive comedy hypnosis show (and is currently the only one in the world!) It’s a truly unique, interactive hypnotic experience. Every night is different, hilarious and unpredictable and that’s pretty exciting for both us and the audience! People come back time and time again…We’re able to give our volunteers an opportunity to experience something truly unique and essentially live out their Sin City dreams on stage! The only limit is their own imaginations!

Who in the comedy world influences you the most?

Hmmn, I’m a MASSIVE comedy fan…I’ve been likened to a cocktail of Michael McIntyre, Derren Brown and Dave Spikey! Which are 3 of my biggest influences! I think Michael McIntyre’s camp, energetic commercial appeal, mixed with Dave Spikey’s clever, affable comedy and northern charm and of course Derren Brown’s little bit of added mystery and mesmerism is a pretty perfect way to describe me!

What was your worst on stage experience?

I was just getting participants up for a show when one of the participants literally just sat down…and threw up on me…(and a little bit on another participant!) I don’t know if it as nerves or drink – but it certainly didn’t go down all too well!

What is your favourite cracker joke?

I felt sorry for the hypnotist I saw last night, he hypnotised 7 guys on stage – then dropped the mic on his foot and yelled “fuck me!”…What happened next will haunt me for the rest of my life…
