Lampadophores – Sir Nigel Gresley Square, Doncaster

Reviewer: Christopher Holmes

Created and conceived by Picto Facto

Not your average Friday night, this visual feast presented by Picto Facto in association with Global Streets was a real treat. Located just outside of, and supported by, Cast, Doncaster, Lampadophores is a promenade community theatre piece that has a sense of community and deep-rooted pride at its heart.

Using many theatrical conventions such as mime, physical theatre, clowning, acrobatics and puppetry, this company, who hail from France, are clearly experts in their craft.

The event, which started on Sir Nigel Gresley Square (in front of Cast) began its procession down Wood street and circled the city onto High Street before turning onto St Sepulchure and Frenchgate returning back to where we started.

The pre-show information provided by Cast was transparent and offered a safe space for those with neurodiversities although everyone seemed utterly enthralled by this multi-sensory experience and literal gasps were heard throughout.

There was a real sense of community and pride this evening as these giant inflatables bumbled around the town causing mischief and mayhem. This joyously spirited performance art was multi-faceted and expertly managed by the Cast staff and volunteers. As the parade passed by the streets of Doncaster more and more intrigued passers by joined the fold. The weather was kind too.

With folk looking on through their balconies and apartment windows to see what all the fuss was about there was a real feeling of togetherness – really powerful. It’s not often you see inflatable Blimps soaring through the skies of this Yorkshire town, but this was a risk that paid off.

Although the story lacked any real sense of cohesion, that didn’t seem to matter here. Their motivation was to pull in a crowd and share good vibes and the company produced this in spades.

Doncaster was certainly alive tonight and, culminating in one massive dance party back in the square, it was clear that this spectacular celebration was one of love and acceptance. Think Carnival of Animalson acid. Superb.
