What would happen if Juliet didn’t kill herself?

& Juliet is a high-energy reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic tale Romeo & Juliet, full of humour, heart, and an infectious pop soundtrack. Originally premiering in 2019 in Manchester before transferring to the West End, this jukebox musical gained international acclaim, with productions on Broadway and in Toronto. Written by David West Read, the show features the songs of legendary pop songwriter Max Martin. The question is asked: what if Juliet didn’t kill herself?

The show celebrates individuality, confidence and the power of rewriting your own story. The soundtrack lends itself perfectly to the message of championing self-expression, independence and the courage to embrace who you truly are.

At the heart of this production is the phenomenal Gerardine Sacdalan as Juliet. She is an absolute powerhouse, delivering soaring vocals and deeply emotive moments that make the audience truly invest in her character’s journey. Whether she’s belting out anthems like Roar or conveying raw vulnerability in quieter moments, her performance is both commanding and heartfelt.

Equally outstanding is Lara Denning as Anne Hathaway (Shakespeare’s wife, who playfully rewrites her husband’s narrative). Denning is hilarious, bringing impeccable comic timing and boundless energy to the role. Her vocals are sublime. One of the most memorable moments is her duet with Juliet on That’s The Way It Is, where their voices blend beautifully and she gets her own moment to shine in this heartfelt, show-stopping performance.

The ensemble is incredibly strong, their energy is infectious with slick choreography and singing stunning harmonies. Particular favourite group moments are Larger Than Life and Everybody.

The set, designed by Soutra Gilmour, is spectacular, bold, colourful, and playful. Giant illuminated quills, Renaissance-inspired architecture, neon signs and dazzling pop concert lighting bring together the old and new. Inventive transitions between Verona to Paris are seamless and the vibrant costumes designed by Paloma Young add to the vibrancy of the performance.

& Juliet is absolutely joyous. It’s silly, funny and impossible not to leave with a huge smile on your face. With its electrifying performances, clever storytelling, and chart-topping soundtrack, this production is a must-see for anyone looking for a night of pure entertainment.

Runs until Saturday 29 March 2025, before continuing on tour
