It’s that time of year where families flock to theatres across the country to get their fill of fun and frolics. And in central Manchester this year, the panto that’s been planted is Jack and the Beanstalk, with Salford-born comedian and musical theatre star Jason Manford in the leading role.
Directed by Guy Unsworth and presented by Crossroads Pantomimes, this Manchester Opera House production loosely follows the traditional tale of Jack, who has to give up his prize cow to try and save his Princess Jill (Emma Williams) from the terrifying Giant and his wife Myra Blunderbore (Myra Dubois). But in true pantomime fashion, this is so much more than just a story – it’s filled with theatrical spectacle, incredible singing and dancing and comedy that will have you howling throughout the entire performance.
This is a cast that just clicks and there really isn’t one weak link. From the slick ensemble, to the insanely talented leading roles, this is a panto cast to aspire to, with performances that will well and truly blow your socks off. Manford leads the show with ease, starting the production joking about his age and the casting- he’s well aware this role wasn’t made for him and yet it does somehow work. His comedy throughout is spot on, especially when he teams up with former Britain’s Got Talent finalist Ben Nickless (Silly Simon) and his vocals never miss a beat. Nickless is truly outstanding, a seasoned pro, who delivers scene after scene – even treating the audience to a full impressionist sketch, which is beyond impressive. The girls also shine, Williams showing why she’s been a West End leading lady – turning a role that could on surface level be quite drab into something much more energised and powerful. Samara Casteallo as the Spirit of the Beans (similar to the traditional fairy role) also gives a captivating performance and shows how these performers are far more than one trick ponies – they are triple threats, who are all clearly loving each other’s camaraderie and the seasonal scene they are a part of.
The humour has something for everyone. with comedy aimed at both children and adults, a real mix of songs, with tweaked renditions of classics including songs from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and some classic panto sketches and audience interaction.
The scenery, lighting and overall spectacle is just stunning – bringing the stellar script by Harry Michaels to life with the wow factor. Audiences can expect far more than just a beanstalk – including a flying car, pyrotechnics and a giant that has to be seen to be believed.
This rendition of Jack doesn’t only see the cast get to the top of the beanstalk, but to the very top of their game as well. You’d be hard pressed to find a better panto right now. Flawless fun that is an absolute festive must-have for young and old alike.
