Intentions – Civic Theatre, Dublin

Writer and Director: Alice Lynch

Reviewer: Ciara Murphy

Presented by The Moogles Theatre CompanyIntentions is a performance that primarily focuses on the power of female friendship. Utilising the unlikely setting of the ‘one man tent’ section of a local music festival, the play’s three female characters – Jenny (Aisling Soden), Louise (Bernie O’ Reilly), and Emma (Catherine McKiernan) – embark on a mutual and emotional journey.

The beginning of this performance struck this reviewer as being somewhat lackluster. Despite attending the show late in the run one felt as if this piece was more ‘work-in-progress’ than complete. There were several reasons for this, the main issue being a perceivable lack of confidence by the actors onstage. The comedy at times was a little bit forced, and felt quite outdated.

Despite this the three actors engaged well with the script, and certainly exuded an enthusiasm for their rôles that the show could not have done without. This reviewer felt that Catherine McKiernan’s portrayal of the concerned Irish mother was one of the consistent performative and comedic highlights in the show.

Lynch’s writing reinforced the natural beauty of the burgeoning relationships between the three women and as the play progressed it was easy to look past some of the less satisfactory moments. What this ensemblepresent is a web of clever ideas, local humour, and a sense of a deeper story. With a little tweaking the production value ofIntentions has the capability to soar.
