The musical adaptation of the beloved film Ghost, which starred Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore, returns to the stage with a UK tour. We see the deceased Sam Wheat who attempts to protect his former girlfriend Molly Jensen as he sees that she is in danger. The musical is, obviously, full of emotion whilst finding moments for comedy as well.
Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard’s score is beautiful. Ballad heavy, but moving and a delight to listen to. Bob Tomson directs this production and proves that the show can be put on with less flashing lights, LED screens and spectacle – although at times, particularly in big company numbers, the show can feel a little lacklustre. Alistair David’s choreography is full of energy and performed with precision, but there are not enough performs to fill the stage. Mark Bailey’s set design works well, transitioning between the many different locations seamlessly. Nick Richings’ lighting design builds tension and heightens the emotion at just the right moments.
Rebekah Lowings plays the role of Molly, reprising the role from her previous UK tour. She is truly stunning in the role. She delivers impeccable vocals throughout. She has a lovely chemistry with Josh St. Clair, new to the role of Sam. He delivers some powerful vocals and captures the struggle and anger of Sam wonderfully. James Mateo-Salt is also new to the production for this UK tour as Carl Bruner. He is deliciously evil – someone you really love to hate – and finds opportunities to sing up a storm. Jacqui Dubois returns to Ghost as Oda Mae Brown. She has a fantastic stage presence, adding the comedy into an otherwise deeply emotional show.
Ghost the Musical is a lovely evening out for fans of the film or musical, or those who are new to the story. Whilst the show doesn’t boast the same spectacle as previous productions, the source material still stands strong with a whole host of lovely musical numbers, all delivered by a talented cast.
Runs until 15th March 2025, before continuing on tour
