This a review about bubbles.
Correction. This is a glowing review about bubbles.
New World Stages hosts the Yang family’s Gazillion Bubble Show, and the name is by no means an exaggeration. It may well be an understatement. Bubbles of all sizes, including some large enough to hold four children (seriously!) fill the space throughout this magical one-hour performance. On 14 November, Melody Yang took the stage and captivated a theatre full of children and their grownups.
“How can bubbles fill an entire hour?” one may ask. Easily (with a few brief video interludes to allow for scenic/equipment changes)! Big bubbles, small bubbles, big bubbles with small bubbles inside them. Bubbles made with dry ice, bubbles blown by machines directly into the audience. Bubbles spanning the entire stage, bubbles snowing. Bubble hats. Bubbles and laser lights. Throughout it all, Yang charms the audience with a joyous energy. She clearly adores children and makes each child that comes onstage to participate in some bubble… stunts? moments? tricks? feats?… feel welcome and seen. Even through their masks, the glee on their young faces is apparent to the audience.
Not only were the kids in the crowd (rightfully) having the time of their lives, the show is plenty of fun for the adults in the house too! In addition to the sheer unbelievability of what Yang can achieve, there’s a bumping party atmosphere to the entire show. Between the music, lighting, and energy, Gazillion Bubble Show creates nightclub/scene vibes for a family friendly audience. There is a purity to this show – no pretense, no hidden agenda. It is simply an hour of joy, magic, imagination… and yes, at least a gazillion bubbles.
