Next up in our annual series of Fringe preview Q & A’s it’s the turn of Ben Van der Velde.
In one sentence tell us about your show.
A small, furry man tries to work out his place in a world of large, uncaring, sharp objects.
What made you decide to bring a show this year?
What else are you meant to do in August?
Any advice you’ve heard or can give to anyone coming to the Fringe for the first time?
If you’re performing it really is a good idea to treat it like a sporting event. Despite any best intentions you have you will end up failing to pace yourself and burning the candle at both ends, so do your best to eat well and exercise. Also, one day a week, get out of town and it’ll help you remember that there are a lot of people who don’t care at all about the Fringe. It’ll give you healthy perspective. Oh, and always misdirect American tourists. It’s the small pleasures…
What makes your show stand out from all the others on offer? (Don’t say that it’s because you’re in it!)
It’s probably the only show on the Fringe to contain jokes about Laika the dog, the Olympic modern pentathlon and freemasonry.
What show, other than your own, do you not want to miss?
John-Luke Roberts. Unfailingly smart, inventive, weird, yet accessible, brave and stupid.
Finally, the boring but essential bit…
