Set mere days after the crucifixion, Judas Exclusive imagines Judas Iscariot making his first public appearance on Simona Tonight, an ailing 33 AD late-night TV talk show. Framed by garish studio furniture and utilising audience cue cards demanding ‘Boo’, ‘Clap’, and ‘Ooo’, the production delivers a sharp, high-concept media satire.
At the centre of the chaos is Beth Mullen as Simona, a celebrity host who becomes progressively more intoxicated as the broadcast unfolds seemingly more interested in ratings than the interview itself. Nicholas Alexander gives a compelling performance as Judas, pleading that he only betrayed Jesus at Christ’s own request. While the plot frames him as an opportunist, Alexander’s portrayal carries genuine weight, grounding Judas’ motives in a complex love for Jesus. Will McDowell provides a brilliant foil as Peter the Disciple – a gentle, golden-boy character whose squeaky-clean innocence infuriates Judas.
The production excels during its melodramatic talk-show moments, particularly when Judas berates Peter just as Simona welcomes him live on air. Occasional blackout cutaways to other TV parodies – such as news bulletins and A Place in the Sun, performed live by the cast – slightly stall the show’s momentum.
Nevertheless, Judas Exclusive remains a clever and entertaining piece of theatre. Supported by a talented trio and sharp writing, it offers a refreshing, camp-infused spin on fame, betrayal, and redemption.
