Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story – King’s Head Theatre, London

Reviewer: Andrew Houghton

Writer: Linus Karp

Co-Directors: Linus Karp and Joseph Martin

Awkward Productions has mastered the art of translating contemporary pop culture and internet humour into theatre. Having enjoyed an extensive UK tour, a sell-out Edinburgh Fringe run, and multiple London appearances including a sold-out performance at The Clapham Grand, Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story is an utterly ridiculous and ingeniously-crafted fairytale which audiences just can’t get enough of.

This royal romp is not Awkward Productions’ first (nor last) hit production, having enjoyed exponential success from Awkward Conversations With Animals I’ve F*cked, to How To Live A Jellicle Life, and most recently its celebrity-stacked run of Gwyneth Goes Skiing. Like its company siblings, Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story is an absolute p*ss-take which could almost be considered trolling if it weren’t crafted with such love for its titular subject.

Love, in fact, is a central theme in Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story – which is not a reference to her disastrous marriage which writer/performer Linus Karp tears apart with glee, but rather a nod to the spotlight on Diana as an LGBTQ+ icon. To little surprise, this production – helmed by Karp alongside his real-life partner Joseph Martin – has attracted a particularly queer fanbase and is wholeheartedly embraced with camp antics and an unwavering message of acceptance.

As co-directors, the pair never rests on their laurels and continue to level up this already-acclaimed show. The current production features a new guest appearance from Jeanna de Waal, who played Diana in the utterly iconic and famously slated Broadway flop Diana: The Musical. To pair Karp and de Waal is a twisted and ingenious match made in heaven and further consolidates just how attuned Awkward Productions are to the tastes of its fanbase.

For those new to Awkward Productions’ work, Karp’s gentle presence and soft-spoken performance style may come as a surprise in comparison to the company’s bold marketing and reputation. This tender touch, however, is perfectly suited for a presentation of the beloved and modest Princess Di. Karp’s sweet tone also packs one hell of a punch when paired with some of the darker moments of his twisted script. Be warned, the creators of Awkward Productions have wicked minds and, without a doubt, truly bright futures.

Karp really is the people’s princess, encouraging audiences to get involved throughout as supporting cast members of the show. These interactions, along with the Diana propaganda filling the pre-show bar, the post-show meet & greet, the merchandise and the soundtrack available on Spotify make Diana: The Untold and Untrue Story so much more than just a show. It’s an experience. It’s a lifestyle. It is the moment.
