Courtney Act: Dashing Through the Divas – Laurie Beechman Theatre, New York

Writer: Courtney Act
Reviewer: Adrienne Sowers

Streisand, Carey, Clooney, Midler… and Act. Drag superstar Courtney Act brings her own diva power to holiday classics by iconic performers to the Laurie Beechman stage. Covering holiday pop songs, classic Aussie Christmas tunes, and a few original pieces, Act fills the theatre with joy and high notes.

Act’s diva-esque persona and classically beautiful look provides a great juxtaposition to the affable and funny persona that shines throughout the performance. Whether she’s doing the original choreography from Six White Boomers or belting All I Want for Christmas Is You, Act strikes a fantastic balance between belting for the gods and bringing a cheeky campiness to her show.

Handling hecklers with aplomb, collecting kisses from the audience, and dazzling in several sequined ensembles, Act brings a holiday spirit with extra sparkle to the Laurie Beechman. Between pop culture references, political satire, witty banter with audience and staff, and video tutorials, Courtney Act inspires even the grinchiest of audience members to get a bit more into the holiday spirit. Or the peppermint schnapps if nothing else.
