Colin Cloud: The Forensic Mind Reader – The Lowry, Salford

Reviewer: Julia Taylor

Colin Cloud: The Forensic Mind Reader is, frankly, mind boggling. How on earth can he, just by looking at someone, dig out secret information such as how much money a woman has in her purse or deduce what town someone comes from simply by hearing them say ‘hello’?

The word, deduce is the key word. It suggests that he obtained the information by reasoning rather than from psychic skill and Cloud would be the first to admit this… So, where does the forensic part stem from? Cloud actually took a four year honours degree in forensic investigation which is another of his “secrets of success”.

Cloud likes to fashion himself after his hero Sherlock Holmes to whom he was introduced when just eight years old. We presume his knowledge of the fictional detective helps him to guess what people are thinking. Yet it’s still a mystery how he observes the goings on in someone else’s brain. Most people look slightly uneasy fearing they will be selected as, for example, the best liar in the room or to have their memories written on a slip of paper, unearthed without looking.

A lot depends on how you are chosen. In most cases, it is the audience itself who select the next victim. Thank goodness, Cloud also has a great sense of humour added to enormous stage presence ensuring observers’ fears are laughed away. Believers and sceptics alike will enjoy the talented trickery he employs.

The Forensic Mind Reader is just as intriguing as a traditional stage show and Colin Cloud provides an experience you’ll never match anywhere else.
