Card Ninja – The Lowry, Salford

Writer/Director: Javier Jarquin

Reviewer: Harriet Mallion

Join Javier Jarquin on his quest to become an unparalleled master of cards. A series of unforgiving challenges lie ahead and Jarquin will be tested on speed, accuracy and wisdom to determine whether he has earnt the elusive title of Card Ninja.

Using genuine Bicycle playing cards, a brand favoured by magicians worldwide, Jarquin demonstrates an unusual assortment of tricks and talents. From sleight of hand to quite astonishing speed and accuracy. Jarquin performs each trick live, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie between himself and the audience. But don’t be fooled into thinking this is a magic show. Card Ninja is a family friendly show, punctuated with amusing anecdotes, well-timed jokes and some wonderful nostalgic moments.

Card Ninja comes with the traditional setbacks that you would expect from a live show, one of the challenges takes several attempts and another is over abruptly after a dramatic build-up. But Jarquin overcomes these hiccups with the confidence and energy of a natural performer, he embraces the unpredictable and thrives on aspects of audience participation.

For a one-man show Card Ninja quickly fills the room with energy and enthusiasm, Jarquin possesses an impressive skill set, demonstrating dextrous tricks and quick wit, it’s clear he’s holding all the cards.

This is the first production Javier Jarquin has brought to The Lowry, Card Ninja is touring various theatres across the UK until late July.
