Back by popular demand for 2017, our Brighton Bites series offer short, witty and slightly tongue-in-cheek insights into shows performing at England’s largest arts festival. Hopefully, they will whet your appetite to try something new at this year’s Brighton Fringe.
Here, Tangerine Theatre Company tells us about their show, Goddess, which they’ll be performing at The Warren.
How would you describe your show in one sentence?
A funny, filthy gobbed, plus sized TV advice star who channels an ancient goddess to help women find their true selves, reveals more than she bargains for.
Why Brighton Fringe for this show?
The writer (Serena Haywood) bangs endlessly on about growing up in Brighton (she lies, it was really Hassocks) and spent much of the 1980’s seeing partial nudity in the Fringe so it’s her dream to have a play performed here. Goddess is set in Rhyl, with the sound of the seagulls and smell of the chips and so is ideal for a seaside festival. Brighton is full of strong, funny women like Goddess’s character, Holiday. We know she will feel right at home here.
How have you been preparing for Brighton Fringe?
Eating grab bags of Skips.
What do you think sets your show apart from all the other festival offerings?
I think we are pretty safe in assuming there are no other shows about a middle-aged lady channeling inappropriate TV chat show advice via an ancient Maltese goddess. This is not only hootingly funny but heartbreaking too. Holiday takes you on her journey from the caravan parks, seafront to glamorous hotels but there is a dark centre to the tale. Maybe the goddess is keeping a secret?
What’s the show that you don’t want to miss at this year’s Brighton Fringe (apart from your own)?
Trouble With Men by Nick Myles (17th-19th May). Writing at its peak.
What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever been given for performing at a Fringe Festival?
See as much as you can, drink as much as you are able and leave loads of spending money for North Laine.
