Back by popular demand for 2017, our Brighton Bites series offer short, witty and slightly tongue-in-cheek insights into shows performing at England’s largest arts festival. Hopefully, they will whet your appetite to try something new at this year’s Brighton Fringe.
Here, Luke Nowell tells us about his show,Being Hueman Being, which he’ll be performing atThe Warren: Theatre Box.
How would you describe your show in one sentence?
A world of fantasy and ridiculousness exploring what is funny and colourful about Being Hueman Being.
Why Brighton Fringe for this show?
This is my first time at Brighton Fringe so I’m jumping in blind. From what I’ve heard it’s a fantastic and creative hotbed for performers. I think my style of comedy will fit in perfectly here.
How have you been preparing for Brighton Fringe?
Leading up to this fringe I’ve performed in Australia, the UK and Paris. When preparing I follow the pleasure. Whatever makes me laugh is what I do. I also like to perform bits and pieces in front of friends. If they laugh, I explore these bits further. If they cry, I’ve either struck gold or made a big mistake.
What do you think sets your show apart from all the other festival offerings?
My stuff tends to be a very visceral experience – it’s funny but it also makes you feel again. This is because my training under Philippe Gaulier has taught me to be sensitive to the audience. You follow the pleasure, and when the audience like it, you keep following that. This feeds into itself, creating spontaneous, fantasy-full and outlandish comedy.
What’s the show that you don’t want to miss at this year’s Brighton Fringe (apart from your own)?
Dream Team by Zach and Viggo. Also, LAID by Natalie Palamides because I love anything a little bit weird
What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever been given for performing at a Fringe Festival?
Enjoy it. It’s so true
If your show was a flavour of ice cream being sold on Brighton Pier, what would it be?
Well, it would have to be rainbow flavour, wouldn’t it? After all, the show is called Being Hueman Being.
