Brighton Bites: Kiki Mellék: Law of Attraction

After an amazing response last year we have once again resurrected our Brighton Bites mini-interviews. These short and snappy Q&As offer an, occasionally witty – often hilarious, insight into the acts strutting, sailing, surfing (insert preferred form of transport here) in to join the line-up of England’s largest arts festival, Brighton Fringe. 2018 was a record-breaking year for the Fringe with over 575,000 people attending the festival; and with 2019 promising to be more inclusive than ever, our Bites aim to give you a taste of what’s in store across the 4,500+ events and performances that are on offer.

Next up, Jo Calderwood tells us about her show Kiki Mellék: Law of Attraction which is coming to The Warren: The Burrow.

Describe your show in one sentence?
A phantasmagorical, self-help seminar like no other from a true force of ENHANCED nature: Hyper Queen Kiki Mellék!

Why Brighton Fringe?
Brighton is a vibrant and expressive city that celebrates of varieties of performance art. I’ve been wanting to bring Kiki to Brighton for ages!

How did the show get to where it is today?
Kiki began as a 5-minute act back in 2017. After developing further acts, filming Youtube videos and performing on the UK cabaret scene I wrote my Kiki one-woman show and took her up to the Edinburgh Fringe in August 2018.

What do you think sets your show apart from all the other festival offerings?
Kiki’s character, physicality and exuberance is unique. Through comedy I am discussing the 21st-century obsession with body perfection and Kiki is highlighting and contouring the ridiculous lengths we go to in the pursuit of the so-called ‘perfect image’.

What show do you not want to miss at this year’s Brighton Fringe (apart from your own!)?
Herstory by Polly Clamourous Collective. Jack Stark: Tea, Bee, Sea and Virgin Xtravaganzah

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given, or would give, for performing at a fringe festival?
Enjoy it – its hard work and time at the fringe is like no other but the main objective should always be to have fun… Probably a good mantra for life before and after the fringe too!

With the theme of this year’s festival being ‘DARE to Discover’, we’d like you to tell us a TRUTH – something about you or the show that fans may not know.
I’m married to my techy!

Kiki Mellék: Law of Attraction runs at Brighton Fringe from 8-11 May 2019. Brighton Fringe takes place between 3 May – 2 June 2019; www.brightonfringe.org
