Back by popular demand for 2017, our Brighton Bites series offer short, witty and slightly tongue-in-cheek insights into shows performing at England’s largest arts festival. Hopefully, they will whet your appetite to try something new at this year’s Brighton Fringe.
Here, Hijinx Theatre tells us about their show, Meet Fred, which they’ll be performing at The Warren.
How would you describe your show in one sentence?
I Daniel Blake Vs The Muppets
Why Brighton Fringe for this show?
We had a great run at Edinburgh Fringe in 2016, selling out and receiving mostly 5-star reviews. We love the show and want as many people as possible to see it, so we thought we’d give it an outing in Brighton.
How have you been preparing for Brighton Fringe?
Our run in Brighton will be at the tail end of a 16-week tour we started back in January, taking the show to 55 venues around the UK, plus dates in Spain, Czech Republic and Germany. I guess you could say that the tour has been our preparation .
What do you think sets your show apart from all the other festival offerings?
We are an inclusive company, which means all our shows include performers with learning disability, and Meet Fred is no exception. Added to that the show has received a huge amount of critical acclaim since we first performed it in February 2016.
What’s the show that you don’t want to miss at this year’s Brighton Fringe (apart from your own)?I love Familia de la noche, so can’t wait to see their piece.
What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever been given for performing at a Fringe Festival?
Wear comfortable shoes!
If your show was a flavour of ice cream being sold on Brighton Pier, what would it be?
Bubblebum flavour, you’ll have to see the show to find out why!
Meet Fred runs at Brighton Fringe 19 – 21 May 2017
