Back by popular demand for 2017, our Brighton Bites series offer short, witty and slightly tongue-in- cheek insights into shows performing at England’s largest arts festival. Hopefully, they will whet your appetite to try something new at this year’s Brighton Fringe.
Here, Familia de la Noche tells us about their show,The Greatest Liar in all the World, which they’ll be performing at The Warren.
How would you describe your show in one sentence?
A hilarious, heartbreaking story of extraordinary encounters, curious characters and lost love.
Why Brighton Fringe for this show?
This is our first time at Brighton Fringe. The Greatest Liar in all the World has been really successful at Edinburgh Fringe and touring across the UK and we wanted to everyone in Brighton to enjoy it too. Becca, our Artistic Director, grew up near Brighton and spent a lot of her teenage years wandering around the lanes (there was tie dye – but thankfully not much photographic evidence) so Brighton is a homecoming gig for us and we’re really excited.
How have you been preparing for Brighton Fringe?
The show is in rehearsal, we’re dusting off our props and flexing our puppetting muscles. We’ve also been getting to know lots of different people in Brighton to let them know about the show – it’s been lovely.
What do you think sets your show apart from all the other festival offerings?
The Greatest Liar in all the World has something for everyone, it’s charming, funny,
beautiful, bizarre and moving. It’s a story that you’ll recognise (about the adventures
of a wooden boy) but given a twist that changes it from a kids story to something that
everybody will enjoy.
What’s the show that you don’t want to miss at this year’s Brighton Fringe (apart from your own)?
So many. Anything from The Human Zoo Theatre Company (Giant, The Girl who fell in love with the Moon), Sparkle and Dark’s I am Beast and for a good night out you can’t beat Sh*t-faced Shakespeare.
What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever been given for performing at a Fringe Festival?Embrace the madness and take your vitamins
If your show was a flavour of ice cream being sold on Brighton Pier, what would it be?
Raspberry Ripple – Fun, weirdly beautiful and a little bit fruity. Can we have some chocolate sauce and some nuts too?
The Greatest Liar in all the World runs at Brighton Fringe 30 May, 1, 3, 4 June
