Our Brighton Bites series offers short, witty and slightly tongue-in-cheek insights into the offerings at England’s largest arts festival. Samuel Javid of Leicester Comedy Festivaltells us about their showComedy in the Dark, performing at Republic, Brighton.
How would you describe your show in one sentence?
The most fun you can have with lights switched off…
Is this your first visit to Brighton Fringe, if so what interesting tales have you been told about what to expect?
We’ve visited Brighton many times before but never for the Fringe. We tend to prefer the night times rather than the days as it’s darker then, and we like darkness.
How has the show developed on the way to Brighton?
We’ve picked up a few Brighton locals for these shows. The fabulous Jen Brister will be joining us for the launch show on the 10th, and star of Mock the Week &The News Quiz, Zoe Lyons on the 17th.
How have you been preparing for Brighton Fringe?
We’ve been sneaking into comedians houses and stealing their light bulbs. It helps them get in the ‘zone’.
What do you think sets your show apart from all the other festival offerings?
Not only can audiences expect a totally unique comedy experience, they can also expect to see (well, mostly hear) a stellar line-up of stand-ups including Paul Foot, Nish Kumar, Ellie Taylor, Joel Dommett and John Robins.
What’s the show that you don’t want to miss at this year’s Brighton Fringe (apart from your own!)?
Lynn Ruth Miller. She’s one of the oldest stand-ups in the business (82) and she won the Liberty Award at Leicester Comedy Festival 2015. We should ask her perform at Comedy in the Dark! In fact, we will. After this.
If your show was a flavour of Brighton Rock, what would it be?
It would be like that one from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where you get a three-course meal. But all the meals taste like comedian. I wouldn’t eat it if I were you. But the shows will be great!
