Writer: Bennet Kavanagh
In his new solo show at Aces & Eights, Bennet Kavanagh discovers a new way to blend stand-up comedy, storytelling and music in a rambling train of thought that strays into the unexpected and is interspersed with self-deprecating anecdotes, songs, and Jason Statham impressions. For a work in progress, the show is unbelievably well-formed, and with only a few minor adjustments made to the content and transitions, it stands to be a solid and inventive musical experience.
Presented as a single, 50-minute-long number (containing a wide variety of subjects in dialogue and song), Kavanagh works his audience with a suave, yet playfully self-aware, character. Choosing not to dwell(too much) on his somewhat disastrous Britain’s Got Talent performance, Kavanagh explores topics of the mundane and mediocre to the downright bizarre, not afraid to criticise David Bowie or Michael Jackson for their inability to write coherent songs, or appreciate monks for their collective rendition of the Who Want to be a Millionaire? theme tune. Whatever may be expected to appear in a run-of-the-mill music-comedy routine, it is guaranteed that Kavanagh will take any subject in a completely outlandish direction. His understanding of the foundations of musical comedy makes for a uniquely developed, genre-defying solo act.
While there may be a few lost lines and jokes that don’t yet land quite right, Bennet Kavanagh has developed a strong act that promises to be unique, entertaining, and charismatic, with an air of qualitative storytelling thrown in for good measure.
