Alaska: Christmas is Gay – Laurie Beechman Theatre, New York

Writer: Alaska

This Is My Hair might not be a standard holiday classic, but during the audience request portion of her show at the Laurie Beechman Theatre, Alaska cements it in the collective conscious of her audience as a Christmas hit. Fresh off her win on RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars 2, Alaska charms the sold-out crowd beneath the West Bank Café with her singular performance style.

She sparkles and shines, all while throwing hilarious shade at some of her fellow reality show competitors. A round of celebrity impersonations in rapid succession is flawlessly executed. Non-sequiturs and aesthetic idiosyncrasies make for a charmingly warped performance, transitioning from Madonna tunes to songs from stop-motion animation Christmas specials. There is a sense of play, a sense of fun, a sense of a performer who remains true to the brand her fans know, while still constantly surprising them.

Whether she’s sashaying through the audience, singing/deepthroating her microphone, or filching fries from the tables near the stage, the connection Alaska maintains with her audience throughout the performance is fantastic. Whether the moments she claims to forget what she’s doing are genuine or staged is difficult to tell, adding to the irreverent fun of the evening. Alaska’s star power is evident in this sold-out show, and one can hardly wait for her next visit to the Laurie Beechman.
