9 to 5 the Musical – Regent Theatre, Stoke-On-Trent

Reviewer: Mel Osborne

Book: Patricia Resnick

Music/Lyrics: Dolly Parton

Director: Jeff Calhoun

Following a successful West End run 9 to 5 the Musical is back on a UK tour and sharing ‘a cup of ambition’ with Stoke-on-Trent. Based on the 1980 classic movie. Dolly Parton’s much-loved film is celebrated in a fast-moving comic book-style adaptation. Writer Patricia Resnick, who also wrote the original screenplay, has revamped the story for the stage. It should be noted that although Dolly Parton has written the music and lyrics she is not in the show, but she does make her presence very much known.

The storyline is a mad-cap caper following the journey of three ambitious ladies trying to work in a male-dominated system. Violet (Claire Sweeny) wants to be CEO, Judy (Vivian Panka) wants to get through her first day and Doralee (Stephanie Chandos) can’t understand why her workmates don’t like her. What they all have in common is their hatred of chauvinist boss, Franklin Hart Jnr (Sean Needham).

The original storyline and dialogue try to stay faithful to the film. There is an addition of a love interest for Violet, but it’s good to see her son and the pot-smoking is still included. However, it does seem strange that the dream sequence was not performed as this is an integral part of the plot and a missed opportunity for some theatrical fun.

The setting of the show is bold, bright, and fresh with slick scene changes and an impeccable ensemble. There are also many moments that may make the more prudish audience member blush, which were certainly not in the film. Apart from the toe-tapping 9 to 5 classic, most of the songs are hard to connect with despite being written by the queen of country. The vocals are strong with some melodic riffs, particularly in the case of Ros (Julia J Nagle) and her heart-breaking 5-9 rendition, despite this it feels that the lyrics are quite contrived which is always a danger with these adaptations.

The show is very watchable and little concentration is needed. The female trio lead the show with impeccable comic timing, never missing a beat. Needham is very entertaining as the vile Mr Hart despite a slight lapse of American accent at times. Unlike the actions of his character this is forgivable, and he is a joy to watch and laugh with. Sarah-Marie Maxwell makes a very notable performance as office lush Margaret.

Overall 9 to 5 the Musical is still very entertaining to watch whether it be on film or stage. It is very easy to watch with lots of laughs. Despite being created forty years ago, office politics are still very much alive and kicking and while technology may have progressed there are still many battles to fight.

This show is recommended if you are looking for an entertaining night out with friends. Expect little and laugh a lot.

Runs Until 26 February 2020 and continues on tour
