There’s something very special about celebrating a huge landmark performance at such an iconic West End show.
Wicked has had quite the journey. What started as a Broadway musical based on Gregory Maguire’s novel that reimagined the story behind The Wizard of Oz has grown into a global phenomenon, performed in more than 130 cities around the world and, more recently, adapted into one of the highest-grossing musical films of all time.
And the 20th anniversary performance really does feel like a celebration. The show starts with a short speech from four iconic London Elphabas, and moves into a performance that feels positively electric the whole way through.
The world of theatre can be a fickle one. Many top shows have come and gone over the years, so to hear that Stephen Schwartz’s Wicked has not only hit this incredible 20th-year landmark, but does so at the exact same London theatre in which it started, is nothing short of remarkable. There is something quite surreal about sitting in the Apollo Victoria, knowing that 13 million people have been coming through these same doors to see Wicked over the intervening two decades.
Anyone who has seen the musical will agree that something about it sticks with you even long after you’ve left the theatre. In fact, 20 years later, London is still very much changed For Good.
