0800 Cupid – Soho Theatre, London

Reviewer: Monica Cox

Writer: Emer Dineen

Director: Phillip McMahon

As the audience filters in, a keys and drum band plays the instrumental of Donna Summer’s I Feel Love. Bathed in pink light, the stage transforms into ‘Pinky’s’, a vibrant cabaret club where ‘the world’s first twink’, Cupid, takes centre stage. 0800 Cupid, at its core, is a humorous and chaotic exploration of writer-performer Emer Dineen’s hot mess of a life.

Opening with a campy musical number, Dineen emerges from behind Cupid’s costume, explaining that the audience will be taken through a series of bizarre, real-life events. As she engages with the crowd, asking, “Who’s ever been lonely?” it’s clear from the offset that universal themes of love and being lost will underpin this show. From breakups, existential career crises, family concerns and housing issues, it’s a relatable and dynamic journey from start to finish.

Dineen’s writing is sharp, with quick wit, humorous insights, and some truly theatrical moments. The humour is steeped in ‘Gen Z-ness’ and is London-centric, with lyrics that capture us with their specificity, compensating for when the musical compositions feel less catchy. Nevertheless, the mix of genres, reminiscent of Bo Burnham’s style, brings variety and freshness to each scene while reflective of the protagonist’s journey. The narrative occasionally falters by lacking a clear throughline. The bizarre segways, while often entertaining, sometimes disrupt the flow, leaving parts of Dineen’s life feeling disconnected.

The design elements shine, with Lambdog1066’s costumes truly embodying the word ‘fabulous’. From the Elvis-inspired tailored suit to the sparkling ‘Universe’ ensemble, the attention to detail elevates the production. Similarly, Sarah Jane Shiels’s lighting design is vibrant, adding depth and colour to the performance by mirroring Dineen’s emotional journey.

0800 Cupid is a delightful whirlwind: funny, energetic and entertaining. It’s an enjoyable night out which dizzies us with its chaotic structure.
