PREVIEW: Manc Mini – Richard Carpenter is Close to You

This month The Greater Manchester Fringe returns with a month long packed programme of events to tantalise and excite. To help you decide what to see, we’re running our Manc Mini Previews, asking performers to tell us about their productions.

Here Matthew Floyd Jones talks to us about his show Richard Carpenter is Close to You

How would you describe your show in one sentence?

Piano player from Frisky & Mannish plays piano player from Carpenters in parody play about how frustrating can be when BIRDS SUDDENLY APPEAR every time you step outside your door.

What appealed about appearing at Greater Manchester Fringe?

Manchester feels like my honorary hometown, because my beautiful double act partner Frisky is a Mancunian bird born and bred, and I’ve had some of the most awesome shows there. Just no question that it’s top of the list!

How have you been preparing for the fringe?

Eating chips and gravy and trying to pretend that it’s NORMAL, when everyone knows it should be chips cheese and beans… And also learning to play ten different instruments so I can be a one-man band. And writing loads of wacky Carpenters parody songs so I don’t get sued by the real Richard Carpenter.

What do you think sets your show apart from all the other festival offerings?

Is there another show that delivers comedy, tragedy, songs, sketches, a powerful dramatic narrative and an epic cosmic finale in space, all packaged in white flared trousers and 3-inch platform shoes? I don’t think so!

What’s the show that you don’t want to miss at this year’s Greater Manchester Fringe?

Purely based on description alone, it’s probably got to be Marriage of Kim K…

What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever been given for performing at a Fringe Festival?

If there are more people in the audience than on stage, it’s basically a “crowd” and you should be bloomin’ grateful for that…

Manchester is known for its music scene… If you were to select a song that best represents your show what is the song and why?

because Richard deserves at least one go up front, damn it!

Richard Carpenter is Close to You runs at The Kings Arms on 5th July
